Dota 2 Betting Strategies

Betting Tips

Many bookmakers now offer markets on esports events, with Dota 2 one of the games on which vast numbers of people bet. Here, we will take a closer look at Dota 2 gameplay, and highlight some Dota 2 betting strategies which can hopefully make anyone’s forays into the world of esports gambling a little more successful.

Dota 2 Betting Odds

Odds for Dota 2 are usually given in the fractional format by UK bookmakers, such as 2-1 or 13-2. These can look complicated, but are actually very easy to use once a punter is used to them. Some bookmakers also offer odds in a European decimal format. So, for example, 2-1 becomes 3.00, and 13-2 is 7.50. Decimal odds make calculating possible winnings very simple, as the customer’s stake is simply multiplied by the decimal to calculate winnings.

Tournament Betting

Anyone who visits a bookmaker offering markets on Dota 2 will notice that not all types of bet are related to matches. Some, though by no means all bookmakers, offer markets on overall tournament outcomes too. This is very similar to the type of bet that someone might place on a horse race. Bets can be placed on which team will win the overall tournament. Teams are awarded odds according to the likelihood of them winning the whole event.
Punters can also sometimes bet on which teams are likely to reach the play-offs, or to finish in the top four of a tournament. The betting advice here is to look for teams which are in good form, but are not necessarily favourites, for this type of bet.

Match Betting

Betting on individual matches is the most common way of betting on Dota 2. In addition to placing bets on outright winners, for which the odds are often low, punters can bet using handicaps. This is where each team in a match is awarded a number. If the number is negative, then the team can still provide a winning bet, even if they lose the match, if they lose by less than that number. The vice versa is true for teams which have a positive number. Look out for handicap bets, as they are good way of making the most of the sometimes low odds on successful teams.
Another useful strategy which can help with match betting is to bet using accumulators. This is where a punter combines more than three bets into one betting slip. The odds for all the bets are multiplied together, with the winnings from one bet rolling over to be used as the stake for the next bet. If one bet loses, though, so does the whole slip. But this type of bet is a very good way of betting on favourites in matches. Although favourites often carry low odds, an accumulator, which multiplies these odds together, can really make the best possible use of them.

General Advice

Of all the tips which can be given to a novice gambler, perhaps the most crucial is to bet small to begin with. Keep stakes low until you are comfortable with the processes of betting, and make sure that it stays fun.
